The Rossese di Dolceacqua, the first DOC in Liguria, owes its charm, as well as its undoubted great taste, to its history. It arrives from the Etruscans and Greeks (vines grown with the gobelet shape are still present in many vineyards and could be a Hellenic heritage), but over the centuries everyone has fallen in love with the warm and sensual Rossese di Dolceacqua. From Andrea Doria, who chose it as the wine to encourage his own men before each battle, to Pope Paul III who used it, as if it were a medicine, as a tonic to fight old age weaknesses. And what about Napoleon who, at the height of his power, always wanted barrels of it in Paris and thought it to be the only wine which could give him any comfort in his exile in Saint Helena. A wine like this could not fail to also make us fall in love with it, here at the Azienda Agricola Ramoino; in fact, this is the reason we purchased not only the vineyards, but also a cellar in Dolceacqua in order to make a Rossese di Dolceacqua of the highest quality, in line with all the company’s production. A great red wine which is caressed by the saltiness of the sea, but also by the freezing air of the Ligurian Alps which, often, also let in the cold of the French, Piedmont and Val d’Aosta alpine glaciers. In the cellar, this results in a wine of great structure, with intoxicating aromas, ideal for accompanying seasoned cheeses and meats, especially roasts. A wine that is not afraid of ageing, on the contrary, it acquires charm.
